of the
year.
Wednesday is library
day. Please be
sure your child has his/her book in school
Thursday
is gym day. Please be sure your child is
dressed in gym clothes.
Please
remember that if you are ordering books from the Scholastic Book order,
all
orders are due tomorrow.
It is my tradition
in first
grade to celebrate Polar Express Day
during the week we celebrate St. Nicholas Day. I am told St.
Nicholas
will be visiting on December 6th.
So Tuesday, December 6, the first grade will continue with this
tradition. We begin by reading this
book, and Max Lucado’s book, “The Crippled Lamb” and
base all the day’s
activities on these books. While we are learning, the emphasis is
on
having a fun day filled with activities. In keeping with the
spirit of
the day, I am asking that your child bring a robe, (or big pajama top)
and
slippers to school that day. The children do not
change into their pajamas, but rather slip the robe or
pajama top on over their uniforms, since we will be doing several
projects. The children will not need a snack that day as we will
have a
special treat. Because we celebrate this special day early in
December, I
do not have a Christmas Party. As Christmas approaches I try to
keep the
emphasis on the religious aspect of the holiday and the real meaning of
Christmas for the children.
Please send in an
empty tooth
paste box by next Tuesday.
HOMEWORK
Religion – We
will be studying
about St. Nicholas, and continue to prepare for the season of Advent.
We
will also review chapters 7 & 8, and the children will have a test

chapters tomorrow. We will begin chapter 9.

completed and turned in by tomorrow. Please also turn in the Phillies
reading

Please be sure to practice the
vocabulary for the stories. We will continue working with

possessive forms, and nouns and verbs.
HOMEWORK
Please remember that
our class

Thanksgiving
food drive. All contributions should be in tomorrow.
Wednesday is library

sure your child has his/her book in school.
Wednesday is also our annual
Thanksgiving
Mass. You are welcome to join us as we
thank God in a special way for all he has given us.
Girls
are reminded that jumpers should be worn on days we have Mass.
Thursday is gym day.
Please be
sure the children are dressed appropriately.
Remember
too that your child should begin working on the four November book-it
reports. November is a busy month and it is usually a good idea
to have
the reports done before Thanksgiving.
Don’t forget to send me the calendar for the Phillies
Phantic reading
program.
Each
year I also try to make a shoe box nativity set with the
children. I am
asking that by Monday, November 21, each child brings a shoe box
which has
been covered with wrapping paper. Please cover only the outside
bottom of
the shoe box. The lid too should be sent in, to make it easier
for the
children to carry the project home, but the lid need not be covered.
Please do not cover the inside of the shoebox. If you have
religious wrapping paper, or a solid color paper that would be the
best, since
the shoe box will serve as the stable.
I hope
the posters from Victoria Kann made it home safely.
HOMEWORK
Religion –We will
complete chapter 7
and the Two Great Commandments. We will begin chapter 8 and continue to
focus
on the importance of telling God thank you for all the gifts he has
given us as
we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving. We will also continue to review
the
changes in the language of the Mass. I
will also begin to prepare the children for the season of Advent. We will be making Advent wreaths this week.

Missing” , and “Zack and His
Friends” , as well as the vocabulary that go with these stories.
Math
We will continue
working on problem solving, and continue
working with addition and subtraction with the children .
I want
to stress again the importance of the children memorizing the addition
and
subtraction facts as they are presented. It is very important
that these
facts are memorized for quick recall. We
will be working on related facts in both addition and subtraction.

A QUICK MESSAGE - AUGUST 31
Dear
Parents,
I just wanted to let you
know that the
children are making a good adjustment to first grade.
Thank you for your effort to look for
supplies that are “Made in America.” I
know how difficult it is to find any, since I have been on a search
most of the
summer as I am shopping. It has made me
personally more aware of what I am buying in general.
I am going to take a picture of the children
with some of these supplies and email a copy of the picture to the ABC
evening
news since this is where the “Made in America”
was featured.
Thanks too for covering the books with
contact paper. I know some of you are
having some difficulty finding contact paper.
Don’t worry if you can’t get the books covered
immediately. I only ask that you do it
when you find the paper since this will
keep the books
looking good all year.
You are reminded that if you wish
to order
books from the Scholastic book order that the order should be sent into
school or placed on line by tomorrow.
The children will have gym on Thursdays this year.
Our opening school mass will be
held on
Wednesday, September 7, at 10:00. You
are welcome to join us. Children should
not wear shorts on Mass days. Girls are
also asked to wear their jumpers any day we have Mass.
I am giving each child a
reading bag. This bag is to be used is the
children want
to sign out a book from our classroom to read.
When the children bring the book back in the bag they may choose
another
book. The bag also contains a reading
buddy. The children are to keep the
reading buddy at home and read to it daily.
I also want to remind you to sign
up on the
Book Adventure website. I have found
that the children really enjoy this.
We have begun our letters to our
pen pal
service men. I will be getting them into
the mail this weekend after I get a chance to address them. If you could help me out by supplying a stamp
or two that would be appreciated. I know
that you are being asked to contribute for many things at this time of
year, so
if it is a hardship please don’t worry.
Finally I have registered
the children to
participate in The Phillies “Phanatic about Reading” Program.
Please initial the calendar each day that
your child reads for 15 minutes and turn
it in at the end of the month. I can
periodically enter our class in for a chance to win a visit from the
Philllie
Phanatic.
I will try to send a reminder sheet like this
home at the
beginning of every week. In it, I will
give you a brief summary of the material we will be covering and any
reminders
that might apply to our class.
I want to remind you that there is no school on Friday.
I was happy to meet so many of you at the Meet the Teacher afternoon last Sunday. Once again I am reminding you not to hesitate to get in touch with me by email if you have any questions.
You are also reminded that if you wish to order books from the Scholastic book orders, please return the form and payment by Thursday, Sept. 1st. Please make all checks payable to the Scholastic Book company. Remember you can follow the directions I gave you with the order forms and go on line to order directly. The same due date applies to these orders. If at any time during the year you want to use books as a gift for your child, please indicate this on the order form and I will let you know when the books arrive instead of giving them to your child.
REMEMBER THAT OUR OFFICIAL TIME FOR STARTING
THIS YEAR IS 7:50.
By 8:00 the children begin their class subjects including
their specials. If they are coming in
later than 7:50 they will be missing some subject time, since we may
already be
on our way to gym, etc. If the children are eating breakfast they
should be
here earlier than this so they do have time to eat before we begin our
daily
routine.
PLEASE BE SURE THAT ALL LUNCH MONEY IS SENT
IN BY THURSDAY
FOR THE FOLLOWING WEEK. IF YOUR CHILD
IS AN ALTERNATE THAT MUST BE MARKED ON THE ENVELOPE.
I do have our class now set up to participate on the Book Adventure website. Don’t forget to register on bookadventure.com . Click on New Users register now. Click on Kids register. Then register to play at school. The children will be able to play at school or home and I will be updated of their progress and able to reward them. Our class name is Majors All Americans. The name is case sensitive, and does not allow for an apostrophe in Major.
Please try to cover your child’s copybook, and workbooks with clear contact paper as they are sent home.
Don’t worry as the children make the adjustment to first grade. Be sure they get plenty of rest, and have a healthy breakfast before they start their day. Please be sure to send in healthy snacks.
They will be bringing home books this week to be covered with contact paper and so that you can see the books. If there is anything that must be completed in the books I will let you know.
In helping us keep with our “All American” theme , Mrs. Romanoskie did provide me with a list of service men that will be happy to be pen pals with our class. We have representatives from 16 different states. I am sure this will help the children learn about many different parts of our country. We will be working on our initial letters this week.
I am also reminding you that if possible it would be wonderful if you could find at least one school or classroom supply that is “Made in America”. I am hoping that this will be a good way to kick off the theme in our classroom.
Remember to check out our class webpage at themajors.info/class.html
For Homework this week please just look over the books as they are sent home.
Read on a daily basis.
Review prayers the children have already learned.
